Product Information Industrial Materials and Public Works Market: The World's First Instant Adhesive with Light-Curing Properties Made Possible by Uniquely Developed Technology ThreeBond 1771E / 1773E

The World's First Anionic Photopolymerization Technology Uniquely Developed by Us Makes an Instant Adhesive with Light-Curing Properties a Reality.

Instant adhesives excelling in quick curability and versatility have been widely used for domestic and industrial purposes.
ThreeBond started the manufacture and sale of one-part non-solvent cold-curing instant adhesives in 1969 and has made efforts in developing products to meet customers' requirements in various markets.
However, conventional instant adhesives suffered from the disadvantage of blushing, which degraded the appearance of bonded materials, and in some cases, the use of the adhesives was restricted.
This time, as an innovative means of solving the blushing problem, we developed Three Bond 1771E and 1773E, light-curing instant adhesives which have the advantages of instant adhesives, such as workability, and of light-curing adhesives, using the world's first advanced technology.

"These adhesives are a very effective means which lead to energy conservation and cost reduction on the product line."

Instant adhesives are widely used for domestic and industrial purposes because they are characterized by non-solvent composition, cold curing, one-part formulation, and quick curing.
Since there is a necessity to reduce the cost while maintaining the functionality and quality in order to cope with recent environmental problems and severe price competition, attention is again being paid to the use of instant adhesives.

The light-curing technology has been improved significantly, and due to their easy workability, wide variety of usage, and selective curing, the application of instant adhesives is spreading, particularly to the electric and electronics markets because of their easy workability.

We have developed and launched instant adhesives with light-curing properties which have the advantages of both instant adhesives and light-curing adhesives

Anionic Photopolymerization Technology is Applied to Conventional Instant Adhesives to Give Them Light-Curing Properties.

Fig. 1 Curing Under Light Emissions and Curing as an Instant Adhesive

The conventional representative light-curing resins were synthesized by radical and cationic polymerization.
For radical polymerization in particular, we have techniques which we have spent a long time acquiring. Therefore, we have developed various kinds of adhesives made of such resins based on various designs.

This time, as a result of the application of these techniques to development and examination, we discovered that the reactivity of adhesives was activated dramatically by a certain combination with a polymerization initiator. Thus it was possible to develop light-curing instant adhesives excelling in light-curing properties and storage stability by using anion species and radical species generators. <Fig. 1>

"These adhesives have the advantage of being able to cure more quickly at a lower illuminance compared to general light(UV)-curing resins. Therefore, they can contribute toward the improvement of productivity on high-speed lines." (Yamada)

Provision of Light-Curing Property Prevents Blushing and Enables Bonding by Filling.

Fig. 2 Principle of Blushing

The blushing is caused by the reaction of the monomer vapor from the instant adhesive overflow with moisture in the air. The polymerized instant adhesive becomes a white powder which adheres to the periphery of the bonded parts and causes defects in appearance, such as clouding. (Fig. 2)

Therefore, there was a tendency to avoid the use of instant adhesives for optical parts around lenses or ornaments.

The instant adhesives with light-curing properties developed this time are innovative ones because uncured adhesive overflow is cured under irradiation with light to prevent blushing.

"The instant adhesives have an extremely high reactivity, and in order to develop instant adhesives which can prevent blushing and meet storage stability requirements without losing their characteristic quick curing properties, multilateral verification was required at the design stage. We repeated trial and error every day." (Yamada)

We have launched ThreeBond 1771E and 1773E (Fig. 3) as instant adhesives with light-curing properties. With their high functionality, they are applied by users in various fields.

"Although a part bonded with a light-curing resin must be temporarily secured until light is emitted to the resin, instant adhesives with light-curing properties have the advantage that they do not require a securing jig because the part is instantaneously bonded through the function of the instant adhesive. The use of such an adhesive is a very effective measure to simplify the process, thereby resulting in energy conservation on the production line and cost reduction." (Yamada)

Application equipment for ThreeBond 1700/7700 Series instant adhesives

The instant adhesives with light-curing properties, ThreeBond 1771E and 1773E, overcome blushing, the weakness of conventional instant adhesives, without losing the features of instant adhesives, and they are finding wider applications.

"At present, the adhesives are intended mainly for the electrical and electronics market, which tries to avoid blushing. We will improve their durability and curing performance to bring them to new markets, including the medical field, and create a new technical value through our products to contribute toward the ever-improving industries." (Yamada)
